Team Tilt shines in Italy at first GC32 Racing Tour event of the season

29 May 2016    Décision 35

Team Tilt finished second overall at the opening event of the GC32 Racing Tour, the GC32 Riva Cup, held on Lake Garda, Italy, this weekend. The team on their flying catamaran, helmed by Arnaud Psarofaghis, distinguished themselves by winning eight of the 19 races conducted over the four-day event that started last Thursday.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the young Swiss team led by skipper Sebastien Schneiter and Psarofaghis, on day three of the event, they sustained damage to the boat and missed two races before bouncing back to win two races against a highly experienced international fleet.

Conditions were excellent for the nine competitors with sunshine and a steady 13-20 knot breeze up until today, the final day of the event, when rain stopped play after just one race.

For the first two days of competition, Team Tilt was locked in an intense battle with Norauto (Franck Cammas) and after 12 races, the Swiss team was just one point behind the leader. On Saturday, day three, the team lost its starboard foil at the leeward mark during race one, but thanks to Sebastien Rogues on Team Engie, who leant them a spare, Team Tilt was able to bounce back after just two races on the bench to take two wins.

“We are very happy with our performance,” said helmsman Arnaud Psarofaghis who is on loan from Alinghi. “We could have fought for overall victory, but our boat is not quite there yet and the team has more to learn still. We will come back stronger in Malcesine!”

Twenty-year-old skipper Sebastien Schneiter is delighted with their opening event of the GC32 season: “We did not do much training on this boat before the event, but Glenn Ashby (skipper of America’s Cup team Emirates Team New Zealand) slotted very easily into a well-oiled crew. We knew our boat handling was good, but a second overall is a very nice surprise! It was a shame to break something on the boat, but it happens. We have learned a lot and will use it to improve for the next event.”

Team Tilt’s overall objective on the GC32 circuit is to use the competition as a training platform to prepare for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup, hence Arthur Cevey being on site in Riva as back up crew; he is slated for the team that will race in Bermuda in 2017.
“It was interesting to watch the racing from the RIB, it gave me a chance to study the boat handling, the trim and the positioning. I spent a lot of my time here supporting the shore team, it was good to be able to help the crew.”

Team leader, Alex Schneiter, was proud of his team’s performance: “They did fantastically well at what is such a high level, their performance bodes well for the future. It shows that we are developing in the right direction. Thank you to sports director Tanguy Cariou and the whole team for an exemplary performance!”

The next stage of the GC32 Racing Tour is from 7-10 July in Macesine, Italy. But for now, Team Tilt returns to the Decision 35 on Lake Geneva for the Grand Prix Versoix and the Geneva-Rolle-Geneva this weekend. The 49er crew fly to Weymouth in the UK for the Sailing World Cup.
