Switzerland’s Team Tilt in second place by a point on day two of GC32 Riva Cup

28 May 2016    Décision 35

Team Tilt had another cracking day on Lake Garda at the GC32 Racing Tour Riva Cup on Friday winning three races and finishing second in three to close the day just one point behind Franck Cammas and Norauto in first place.

Conditions were ideal on the famous Italian lake with 15-18 knots, sunshine and a very high level of racing. The slightly higher wind speed caused a few issues on the race course with a capsize from Malizia (no-one was hurt), a collision between Argo and Team Engie that forced Argo to retire, and a technical issue on board Gunvor that led the team to miss the final two races of the day. Just six boats finished.

On board Team Tilt, the Cunningham broke again during race six of the day. The shore team led by Jimmy Le Baut with Tanguy Cariou, Arthur Cevey and Pietro Sibello had some work to do after racing.

“It is going pretty well on board,” said Lucien Cujean. “We are attacking hard, but we are not managing to close the deal on the final leg.

“We are still keeping it simple by being fast and efficient. We are getting to know the priorities on the boat, which are different to other boats and by the end of the day we were racing some good legs without the gennaker which was faster. We have shown Norauto that we are physically up to the challenge – we did not let go for a minute. They definitely have the weight advantage over us though!”

Team leader Alex Schneiter and his wife Marie travelled to Riva to support the team: “It is impressive,” said Alex Schneiter. “I am really happy with their results. I was expecting a good performance from the team, but I hadn’t thought it would be this good. They are posting first and second places consistently, it is excellent. I am very proud of them!

“They are one point closer to the lead boat compared to Thursday, so anything can happen with two days to go.”

For the moment, third placed Armin Strom is 30 points behind Team Tilt.

The young Swiss team, sponsored by Julius Baer and Jiva Hill Park Hotel, are putting on a glittering performance against some of the best sailors in the world with the help of Glenn Ashby, on loan from Emirates Team New Zealand and Arnaud Psarofaghis from Alinghi.
